From Zero to Building Wealth: My Honest Journey After Everyone Said I Couldn’t

Financial independence in India felt like a dream meant for others — not for someone like me. They said I couldn’t do it.

My family said it. My relatives said it. And for a long time — I believed them too.

But here I am. Writing to you from my own blog. On my own terms. And this is the story of how I got here.

Where I Come From — My Path to Financial Independence

I grew up in a small town — culturally rooted, traditionally grounded and beautifully sheltered from the noise of the world. No smartphone. No social media. No exposure to the “real world” that everyone else seemed to already know about.

I was an introvert. An average student. Protected by my family in the way that small-town families protect their children — with love, but also with invisible walls. I didn’t know it then, but those invisible walls would one day make everything harder.

The Day My World Cracked Open

When I got into college in a metropolitan city, I thought it would be the beginning of something wonderful.

It wasn’t. Not at first.

Everyone around me seemed to arrive already knowing things I had never even heard of. They had skills, exposure, confidence and clarity. They spoke about careers, opportunities and futures with an ease that felt completely foreign to me. I was completely out of place.

What followed were some of the hardest years of my life.

I was bullied. Shamed. Teased. Isolated. Made to feel like I didn’t belong — like I was somehow less because of where I came from, how I spoke, what I knew. I endured it. Silently. Alone.

And slowly — it broke something inside me.

My studies suffered. My confidence collapsed. I completed my degree — but I crossed the finish line dragging myself, not running. By the end of it, I knew one thing clearly: I could not spend my life in a career that had already taken so much from me.

Two Years of Searching

So I searched.

For two long years, I looked for a path that felt like mine. Something I could build with my own hands. Something that didn’t require me to fit into a world that had never quite made space for me. I researched everything. Tried multiple things. Failed. Got up. Failed again. And all this time, the pressure at home was building.

“Get a job.” “Stop wasting time.” “You can’t make a living sitting at home with a laptop.” “This won’t work.”

My relatives looked at me with that particular kind of pity that is somehow worse than criticism. The kind that says — we already know how this ends.

I felt the weight of every one of those words.

The Moment Everything Shifted

Somewhere in those two years of searching, I stumbled upon something I had never been taught in school or college:

Personal finance. Wealth building. Financial independence.

And something clicked. Not because it was easy. Not because I suddenly had money or knowledge or a perfect plan. But because for the first time — I found a world where starting from zero was not a weakness. It was the whole point.

I realised that financial independence is not something you’re born into. It’s something you build — one decision, one rupee, one lesson at a time. And I thought — if I can learn this, document this, and share this honestly — maybe I can help someone else who feels exactly the way I felt.

Someone who was never taught about money. Someone who feels behind. Someone who has been told they can’t.

Why I Named It Building Dhan

“Dhan” means wealth in Sanskrit. But for me, building dhan is about so much more than money.

It’s about building self-worth after years of being told you have none. It’s about building freedom when you’ve spent years feeling trapped. It’s about building proof — for yourself, and for everyone who said you couldn’t.

This blog is my real-time journey of doing exactly that.

I’m 26. I’m learning as I go. I’m not a financial advisor or an expert. I’m just someone who finally decided to stop waiting for permission to build her own life.
